HeracleaThe ancient town of  HERACLEA
Only 2 km south of Bitola are the remnants of the ancient town of Heraclea Linkestis, established as a significant strategic centre by Macedonian King Philip II in the 4th century B.C. This city was very important at the time because of its location on the VIA IGNATIA highway, which stretched from Albania across Greece and finished in Turkey. In the early Christian period (4th century A.D.) Heraclea Linkestis was a bishop's seat. After Rome conquered Macedonia in 148 B.C. Heraclea Linkestis was basking in the prosperity, which was mainly due to the road by the city. It is assumed that the town occupied approximately 70 hectares. Only a few buildings have been excavated by now.

The Courthouse
The statue of the goddess of justice, Nemesis, was placed in the Courthouse. After the fall of the Roman Empire, her statue was decapitated and her arms destroyed.

Mosaics
Covering 100m2, the mosaics in Heraclea are known for their exquisite beauty. The mosaic "Universe" is made of small stones in 27 different colors and is considered to be one of the most beautiful floor mosaics in the world.

The Amphitheatre
This amphitheatre had 20 seats for spectators. It was built with first-class marble from quarries around Prilep. Beneath the theatre there is a fountain from the Byzantine period. The front part was merely decorative where animals could drink water and women do the laundry on the other side of the wall.


St. Dimitrija ChurchSt. Dimitrija Church
The church of St. Dimitrija is the biggest church in Bitola. It was built with the donations of traders and craftsmen in 1830. Modest in size (36mx10m), most of its structure was built deep down in the ground. There are three altars in the central part, one to St. Dimitrija, another to Blagovestie, and a third one to St. Nikola, as well as five chapels and a gallery. The interior of the church and its iconostasis was completed in 1845.

St. Bogorodica (Holy Mother of God) Church
The church of St. Bogorodica is a small basilica church built in 1870. This church is a triple flight church with an octagonal cupola on the west side. Under the west entry (door) there is a magnificent iconostasis made by a master woodcarver from Mijak.

St. Nedela ChurchSt. Nedela Church
The church of St. Nedela is a cemetery church built in 1863. A small basilica with one central cupola and two hide on the west side; this church also has a gallery. This is the only church in this part of the country where you can find two stratums of description of life, one in Greek from 1864 and the other in the Slavic language.

 

 

Isak Beg Mosque
This is the biggest and oldest mosque in the town, built in 1506. It was commissioned by the honorable judge from Bitola -- Isak Celebi Ibu Asa, who is buried in the mosque yard. Each side is 14.52m long and the minaret is 45m high. From the time it was built this mosque is a perfect example of the "brusanski" type (Classical Ottoman Age).


Yeni MosqueYeni Mosque
Built in 1558-59 by Kadi Mahmud Effendi, the mosque is currently an art gallery.  The dome diameter is 19m and the minaret is 39m high. What is most special about this mosque are the decorations of the interior, called fajans - especially the ones on the frontal gate. It belongs to the "blue-white" group of the 16th-17th century, whose center is the town of Iznik.

 

Gazi Haydar Kadi Mosque
This mosque was built in 1561-62 by Gazi Haydar on the position where a shepherd bazaar used to be. This mosque, with perfect proportions and two minarets, is one of the most beautiful examples of classical Turkish style of architecture.

Yeni Bath
Yeni Bath is a Turkish bath dating from the 17th century. The bath was active until 1923, when it was destroyed.

Clock TowerClock Tower
The 33m-high Clock Tower is the symbol of Bitola. It was first mentioned in 1664 and assumed its current shape in the 19th century. The clock mechanism, which is still functioning, was installed in 1925.

 

 

 

Old Bazaar Old Bazaar (Stara Carsija)
When the Turks came to Bitola they built the old bazaar, where today you can find some of the oldest crafts in Macedonia. It starts from "DRVEN BAZAAR" to "AT BAZAAR" and nowadays this part of the town is one of the most picturesque parts, where among the narrow streets with small shops and old buildings and between the goods displayed on the street you can still sense the charm and spirit of the Orient. The center of the bazaar, the Bezisten dates from the 14th century. There are three streets and 86 shops inside the Bezisten. As part of the old bazaar one can find Hajji Bey Mosque, built in 1521-22 and unique, as it is shaped in the form of the letter S. Today this old bazaar is super modern, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and small crafts shops.

Sirok Sokak
Sirok Sokak is one of the most representative streets in the central area of the town. This is the area that most young people visit at night. It starts at the Clock Tower and ends at the city park.
It accommodates Epinal Hotel, the Cultural Center, and a Catholic cathedral, as well as lots of cafes. Most houses belong to Jews, but before World War II, where you can still see David’s star. The City Museum, with a small fountain and the army's cultural center are located at the end of the street.
