Covering an area of 317 km2, with a population of 20,362, the town of Gevgelija is located in the southernmost part of the country as the town that is closest to the Greek border. Famous for its mineral water springs, Gevgelija is characterized by a Mediterranean climate and is the country's warmest city. |
Its climate allows the cultivation of various kinds of fruits and vegetables, including some that are typical to the Mediterranean climate, such as figs and lemons. Numerous vineyards with various types of grapes are also found here.
Many archeological sites and rich finds have been discovered in the town and its surroundings. Old chronicles note that Gevgelija's urban development started in mid-19th century. Although navigable at the time, Vardar River could still not meet the needs for transportation of goods, so the construction of the Thessaloniki-Skopje railroad was essential. It was built in 1874, which additionally accelerated the town's development.
